Rock Steady Boxing FAQ
- What Do I Wear?
Wear comfortable, breathable clothes that allow you to move freely. The Hillsborough CKO gym can range from 63-68 degrees, so you might want to bring a sweatshirt. Most of our members wear sweatpants or shorts and t-shirts. Gym shoes are preferred. Rock Steady Boxing t-shirts will be available for purchase.
- What Should I Buy?
For hygienic reasons, we ask that you purchase your own boxing gloves, wraps, and water bottle for class. RSB Hillsborough offers boxing gear at a discounted rate for purchase to RSB members. You can also purchase through on-line retailers, such as Amazon, Title, Walmart or Ringside. Some people like to bring a yoga mat for the floor work but most just get down on the floor.
- What Do I Need to Bring?
We stress the importance of staying properly hydrated, so make sure to bring plenty of water. Water bottles with straws are easier to use with boxing gloves on! Bottled water is available for purchase ($1.00) at the CKO gym if you forget. Some people like to have their own yoga mats (used for stretching exercises) although most boxers just get down on the floor. With that being said, you can find yoga mats for purchase at almost any retailer (Target, Walmart, Amazon, etc.).
- What Should I Expect?
You can expect to be greeted warmly by the staff and your fellow boxers on your first day and you can expect to meet people who share some of the same challenges brought on by PD. Classes are 75-90 minutes long, which include stretching, warm-ups, the workout and a cool-down (and some fun).
- What If I Can’t Keep Up?
It’s important that at any time, if you feel you cannot keep up or become frustrated at not being able to perform at the level of the people around you, you communicate that to your Coach. We can offer modifications and suggestions on alternative training methods to help you focus on specific symptoms or challenges. Rock Steady offers an encouraging, non-judgmental environment that will hopefully allow you to share your specific concerns when necessary. Do not do any exercises that you are uncomfortable doing – talk to your Coach first if you are unsure of a specific exercise.
- How Often Should I Attend Class?
The number of classes one should attend is determined on an individual basis. It is generally recommended that a person attend three times per week in order to see positive results.
Please inform us of which classes you plan to attend on a regular basis. For class planning purposes, either make a note on the Sign-In sheet, email email@example.com or text/call Coach Barb (908-625-4558) or Coach Denise (908-468-0249) if you will be missing a class. Please speak with the Head Coach if you will be out for an extended period of time for a medical (or any other) reason.

- Are There Lockers Available?
RSB Hillsborough: There are no lockers or shower facilities at the CKO kickboxing gym we are sharing. Rock Steady/CKO has a “cubby area” with shelves and hooks in the gym for your belongings. There are two handicapped accessible bathrooms available for changing.
RSB Princeton: There is a handicapped accessible bathroom across from the RSB room that can be used for changing. There are no lockers available, but there is a coat rack/shelving for your belongings.
- Is There a “Buddy System”?
During your first few weeks of class, our coaches will pair you with another boxer or volunteer who will help you learn the fundamentals: where to go, what to do, how to put on your boxing gloves. Remember – everyone was new once!

How Do I Check In?
Hillsborough: If there is another class still in session when you arrive, we ask that you wait in the reception area at the front of the gym until that class has ended. Please sign in on the Sign-In sheet as you enter the gym. Then come mingle with the other boxers and volunteers until class begins and while the gym is being readied for your class!
Princeton Care Center: Come in the front door of Princeton Care Center. There will be a Sign-In sheet for Rock Steady Boxing at the desk. Please sign in. They will direct you to the Rock Steady Boxing Center. If class is still going on, we ask that you wait outside the studio until the class is finished.
